And it should do the same to everyone.

Are the G7 and other leaders of the world so blatantly blind and oblivious to the facts or are they themselves nothing but stern Nazis in their rotten hearts?

Why the Nazis were able to stay in power

Fear and state terrorism

The Nazis created a terror-state. This was achieved through intimidation and brutality. Those living in Germany were too scared to disobey Nazi laws.

Hitler used a number of organizations to uphold and extend his control of Germany.

The SS

The SS (Schutzstaffel) was originally Hitler’s elite personal body guard. It grew into a formidable private army, made up of fanatical supporters of Hitler. He used them as his execution squad to eliminate his opponents.

By 1934,the SS had been put in charge of securing Germany from internal and external enemies.
They controlled the concentration camps, where ‘undesirable people’ were imprisoned.

These included groups of people who the Nazis had deemed either dangerous to the state, to Nazi policies or who were to be eradicated from society:

Political opponents
Opposition
Sinti and Romani people (European Gypsy Travellers)
Jewish people
Religious figures
Anyone that challenged their power

The SD and Gestapo

The SD (Sicherheitsdienst) was the Nazi Party's intelligence and security service. Under the command of Heinrich Himmler and Reinhard Heidrich, the SD aimed to keep every individual in Germany under constant supervision.

After the Reichstag Fire, the SD started compiling a card index of the Nazis' opponents. They could arrest and imprison anyone and worked on the asumption that suspects were guilty. Once imprisoned, it was difficult for anyone to prove their innocence.
The SD was also responsible for tracking foreign opposition to the Nazis. This included censoring media.

The Gestapo (Geheime Staatspolizei, Secret State Police) were the Nazis’ secret police. It played a crucial role in Germany’s internal security.
Over 150,000 informants throughout the country would report any anti-Nazi feeling to the Gestapo.

The Gestapo and informants did not wear uniforms so Germans did not know when they were being spied on. Many ordinary Germans also informed on one another for personal gain or out of jealousy. This created tension and fear throughout the country.

Members of the Gestapo had powers to arrest and detain those people who were considered enemies of the state/Nazi Party. These preventative arrests were carried out separately from judicial control.

Those who were arrested were often violently treated, prior to release or imprisonment. Gestapo tactics included murder and torture of prisoners.

In 1939 the Reich Security Head office (RSHA) was formed. This amalgamated the Gestapo and the SD under the leadership of the SS.

The police force and people’s courts

Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS, was also in charge of the police. This meant no-one investigated the crimes committed by the Nazis

Special 'People's Courts' made sure that opponents of the Nazis charged with treason were found guilty, even if there was little or no evidence.

Judges had to swear an oath of loyalty to the Nazis. This gave the Nazis greater power over the sentencing of political enemies and those deemed to be criminals.

The army

The army became a visible presence in everyday German life. Flags, symbols and uniformed troops on the streets all created a clear impression of the power of the Nazi government.

Together with the use of informants this made people very cautious in raising any opposition to Nazi policy or rule.

The Meaning of Germany’s Dramatic Rearmament

For decades, some in Europe talked up the need for “collective European defense,” a policy to sharply reduce dependence on Washington for military protection. The debate never got far because Britain and Germany saw no reason to jeopardize transatlantic ties with a drive for security independence. When Russia launched a full-on invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it quickly became clear that Europe’s dependence on America for military muscle was deeper than ever.

Then Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office, confronting European leaders with the reality that his commitment to Europe had become an open question—especially as war raged in Ukraine. Earlier this year, the center-right CDU/CSU won federal elections in Germany, elevating Friedrich Merz to Chancellor. Merz wasted no time in trumpeting a plan to dramatically boost Germany’s role in Europe’s defense.

In May, Germany’s Foreign Minister pledged that Germany would spend 5% of GDP on defense, a demand Trump has made several times, and which NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has echoed (the U.S. spends 3.4%). Germany is the second NATO member, after Poland, to back this plan, and Merz has joined France, the U.K., and Poland in a push to bring Russia to peace talks with Ukraine.

But Merz isn’t just bowing to demands from Washington. In his first major policy speech to the Bundestag on May 14, he pledged that Germany’s military would be the “strongest conventional army in Europe,” a breathtaking promise for anyone old enough to remember the days when heavy military investment in post-reunification Germany was politically taboo. Merz will push to increase troop levels from the current 182,000 active-duty soldiers to as many as 240,000 by 2031 (most likely by reintroducing the draft). Germany will also replace aging aircraft, tanks, and ships. The rest will go toward defense-related infrastructure. Even if Merz—whose coalition partner, the Social Democrats, is notoriously reluctant to fully commit to defense—can’t keep all of his promises, Germany will be a different kind of military player within a few years.

Conservative Merz and his probable future coalition partners from the center-left Social Democrats said Tuesday they wanted to ease Germany's strict constitutional "debt brake" to boost the defense budget by hundreds of billions of euros over the next years.

The announcement came just over a week after national elections and while Europe is fretting over its own defense and a weakening of the U.S. security umbrella.

The plans were revealed as part of speeded-up talks between Merz's center-right CDU/CSU bloc and the Social Democrats over a possible new governing alliance.

Their tempo was stepped up further after Friday's televised row between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with the White House subsequently freezing aid to Kyiv.

"There are moments in which the history of a country takes an unexpected turn," the Zeit newspaper said on Wednesday, adding that Merz's plans "may turn out to be one such moment."

Germany pledges to hit 3.5 percent defense spending target by 2029

Germany is set to increase its military budget to 3.5 percent of GDP by 2029, government officials in Berlin told POLITICO on Monday.

The pledge comes just 24 hours before NATO leaders gather in The Hague, where tensions are expected to run high as U.S. President Donald Trump presses allies to dramatically scale up their defense commitments.

For 2025, Berlin has allocated €86 billion to defense, equal to 2.4 percent of gross domestic product, officials said. By 2029, annual defense expenditures are expected to reach €153 billion, or 3.5 percent of GDP — marking the country’s most ambitious rearmament effort since reunification.

To finance the ramp-up, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government has suspended the constitutionally enshrined “debt brake,” clearing the way for defense spending above 1 percent of GDP to be debt-financed.

What’s holding back German rearmament? It turns out, a lot

Berlin wants to boost defense spending and arms production, but the Ukraine War has made it difficult

With NATO’s 75th anniversary summit drawing near, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told the Munich Security Conference in February that Germany would this year meet NATO’s 2% of GDP target for defense spending and would sustain this level “through the 2020s and 2030s.”

But Bastian Giegerich, the head of the London-based International Institute for Security Studies, has said that reversing the effects across Europe of more than 20 years of underfunding of defense capabilities will take at least a decade of substantially increased defense spending. He’s not alone in thinking this way, and for good reason.

Germany’s 2024 budget allocates 51.8 billion euros for defense, by itself short of the 2% of GDP NATO benchmark. Germany seems on course, however, to meet the target by drawing down the 100 billion euro emergency fund announced by Scholz in his famous Zeitenwende (epochal change) speech to the Bundestag in February 2022. Disbursements from this fund are projected to keep Germany’s defense spending at or above the 2% of GDP mark through 2028, after which Germany plans to fund defense through the regular budget process.

Achieving this will require an increase of approximately 30 billion euros over the 2024 defense outlay.
